Socrates Sculpture Park is the only site in the New York Metropolitan area specifically dedicated to providing artists with opportunities to create and exhibit large-scale sculpture and multi-media installations in a unique outdoor environment that encourages strong interaction between artists, artworks and the public. The Park's existence is based on the belief that reclamation, revitalization and creative expression are essential to the survival, humanity and improvement of our urban environment.
Socrates Sculpture Park was an abandoned riverside landfill and illegal dumpsite until 1986 when a coalition of artists and community members, under the leadership of sculptor Mark di Suvero, transformed it into an open studio and exhibition space for artists and a neighborhood park for local residents. Today it is an internationally renowned outdoor museum and artist residency program that also serves as a vital New York City park offering a wide variety of free public programs.

The Dr. Theodore A. Atlas Foundation is a New York-based 501(c)(3) community service organization that provides financial, legal and emotional support to individuals and organizations in need, and focuses particularly on the needs of children.  It was founded in 1997 by boxing trainer and commentator, Teddy Atlas, in order to honor the memory of his father.  In the spirit of Dr. Atlas, who provided free medical care to those who could not afford it and made house calls to give personal care to his patients until he was 80 years old, the Foundation has attempted since its inception to ease the burden of the less fortunate among us.  And it accomplishes this in a very human way, in a way which preserves the dignity of the people it helps.

The Foundation comes to the aid of people in a variety of difficult situations, people who would otherwise fall between the cracks.  It has engaged in large endeavors, such as creating incentive programs in schools to encourage and motivate students, opening and operating a food pantry in Staten Island to make sure that children do not go to bed hungry, and distributing turkeys on Thanksgiving and toys on Christmas to families who do not have the financial resources to properly celebrate the holidays.  And it has helped literally thousands of individuals and families in their time of need.  It purchased a special machine to oxidate the blood of a young girl with pulmonary atresia; it purchased a central air conditioning unit for the home of a young boy whose rare condition caused his skin to blister painfully when the room temperature increased; it surprised a 12-year-old boy with cancer who returned home from chemotherapy to find that his bare room that his mother could not afford to furnish, except for a mattress on the floor, had been painted and equipped with a new bed and furniture and a television; it helped to pay the health insurance of a young boy with lymphoma who was receiving chemotherapy treatments, and then brought him to a Yankee game, where he spent time in the dugout with Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, in order to lift the spirits of the 5-year-old Yankee fan.  This is just a small sampling of the kind of work that the Foundation does every day.

Marcus Browne  is a 20-year-old light heavyweight from Staten Island who believes he is peaking at the right time and will make a giant step toward securing a spot on the 2012 U.S. Olympic boxing team at the Trials this week at the Mobile Civic Center.
Browne's success will have a ripple effect - perhaps for years to come.
Browne trains at the Park Hill Gym in Staten Island, which is financially supported by the Dr. Theodore Atlas Foundation. If the foundation hadn't stepped in after the Police Athletic League decided it would no longer fund amateur boxing in New York City, then boxers like Browne would never have been able to chase their Olympic dreams.  Through his foundation, Atlas is helping two other gyms in New York City under the "Cops and Kids" banner. Two of the boxers under that umbrella program - Pedro Sosa and Louis Cruz of the Bronx - are also at the Olympic Trials.

Teddy called me late one evening to see if I could provide photographs at his Park Hill Gym when some WEST POINT CADETS were coming down to box his boys.  Of course I could and by watching these determined, inspiring young men train and box I again realized that in the game of life it doesn't always matter who wins and comes out on top cause as long as you are on the journey to be the best that you can be, you're never a loser...

If you "Danced the Night Away" with E.C.H.O. on the evening of Oct. 22, you know the name is an acronym for Emergency Children's Help Organization, newly established with the purpose of assisting children and families with special needs.

But for those who were unable to attend and perhaps are unfamiliar with the organization – allow us to fill you in.
E.C.H.O. was formed in April 2008 by Sebastian Angelico and a dynamic group of executive board members who have pledged their support to families of seriously ill children who, due to financial burden, might possibly be denied proper health care. E.C.H.O.'s mission: To accumulate resources to benefit the welfare of a child.
So then, as a way to express their interest and support, and celebrate the success of the organization, a whopping 600 revelers gathered at the lush, Colonial-inspired Eagle Oaks Golf & Country Club in Farmingdale, N.J., to salute the foundation, and discover the generous way it has embraced the community and the manner in which the foundation, still in its infant stages, has benefited children and families.

In fact, during the evening's fare, Heather Fiorentino, mother of 4-year-old Gabriella, felt moved to grace the podium to deliver a heartfelt testimonial on behalf of her daughter, who was diagnosed last year with a non-malignant brain tumor. In addition to the six-hour surgery necessary to excise the tumor, Gabriella had to cope with post-surgery intravenous medications she needed because of a bacterial infection she'd contracted during her lengthy hospital stay.
Upon hearing of the family's plight, E.C.H.O. stepped in to offer their support as well as monetary assistance. And when asked about her condition, Gabriella, who's now doing well and is back to school, is quick to explain with a chuckle that her tumor has made her very strong, inasmuch as she's used to hearing accolades for her strength and perseverance. Mom Heather, dad Robert and sister Daniella, 7, will be eternally grateful to E.C.H.O., a host of individuals whom Heather refers to as her angels.
Honorees for the evening were Cesar Claro, executive director of the Richmond Country Savings Foundation and President and CEO of the Staten Island Development Corp (www.SIEDC.org)

and Greg Murphy of ICAP Securities.

The glamor-laden evening, characterized by refinement and originality, sparkled like one of Hollywood's finest red-carpet affairs, replete with dazzling damsels and the most gentlemanly of gents who wouldn't have missed a chance to donate to the not-for-profit and accomplish volumes for those in need. Revelers received star treatment and waxed ecstatic over the amenities afforded at the well-appointed club accented by old world charm and contemporary creativity.
Darry Dawkins of the Phil 76ers
John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls rock band.

Innovative door prizes, gift baskets, money trees and 50/50 games of chance abounded – not to mention a live auction that included bidding for the renowned Rao's Restaurant reservations, Super Bowl tickets, designer purses and Ranger box seat.
Kudos, then, to executive board members, the above-mentioned Sebastian Angelico, chairman; Paul Dapolito, III, vice chairman; Joseph DiGiso, secretary; Pat Gambaro, treasurer, and members at large Robert Felice, Nicholas Marone and Michael Singer, the board of directors and committee members who have set their sights on assisting children whose future might otherwise be bleak due to a medical or living emergency.
And because an awesome affair is also about good food and music, fine food and cocktails flowed – and once again the party popped with the diversified sounds of E-Squared Entertainment, the dynamic deejay company that took locals through the decades – as well as providing them with a sampling of the top 40.
Those interested in learning more about the organization and/or in making a donation should contact E.C.H.O. at 718 967-9086.
